This post contains several charts showing estimated corn and soybean planting progress data, in actual acreage terms, as it has progressed so far, as well as showing a comparison of estimated acres remaining to be planted and estimated acres planted each week. The USDA’s March 31 Prospective Plantings report state-level acreage estimates are used in the calculations.

Based on the individual state planting progress reports, an estimated 4.0 million acres of corn were planted last week, a bit less than the 4.6 million acres which would have been planted if last week’s planting advanced exactly in line with the 5-year average pace for the week. An estimated 9.4 million acres of corn have been planted so far, right in line with the 9.3 million which the average planting progress numbers for the week indicate should be “expected” at this time. Accordingly, roughly 85.7 million acres of corn remains to be planted based on the USDA’s March 31 Prospective Plantings report estimate.

For soybeans, an estimated 1.8 million acres were planted last week vs the 850k acres which would have been planted if activity occurred in line with the 5-year average pace for the week. An estimated 2.2 million acres of soybeans have been planted so far vs the 1.5 million indicated should be “expected” based on the 5-year average pace. Roughly 85.4 million acres of soybeans remains to be planted based on the USDA’s March 31 Prospective Plantings report estimate vs 86.1 million which would have been left to plant based on an average planting pace.
