In this post, we provide several charts showing estimated corn planting progress data, in actual acreage terms, as it has progressed so far, as well as showing a comparison of estimated acres remaining to be planted and estimated acres planted each week. The USDA’s March 29 Prospective Plantings report state-level acreage estimates are used in the calculations.
Based on the individual state planting progress reports, an estimated 2.6 million acres of corn were planted last week compared to 8.0 million acres which would have been planted if last week’s planting advanced in line with the 5-year average pace for the week. An estimated 7.0 million acres of corn has been planted so far vs 14.6 million which would have been planted if corn planting were moving in line with average levels. Roughly 85.8 million acres of corn remains to be planted based on the USDA’s March 29 Prospective Plantings report estimate vs 78.2 million which would have been left to plant based on an average planting pace. We will continue to update these charts, as well as add soybeans once planting progress begins to be reported, as the planting season continues.
NOTE: The first chart below is provided as a reference for each state’s corn planting progress vs average and is a correction of the chart initially provided in our initial Crop Progress update post. The original map did not reflect this week’s updated numbers for the states in the Delta/Southeast, but all major corn belt state numbers were correct in the original post.
