This post contains several charts showing estimated corn and soybean planting progress data, in actual acreage terms, as it has progressed so far, as well as showing a comparison of estimated acres remaining to be planted and estimated acres planted each week. The USDA’s March 31 Prospective Plantings report state-level acreage estimates are used in the calculations.
Based on the individual state planting progress reports, an estimated 25.2 million acres of corn were planted last week, significantly more than the 14.0 million acres which would have been planted if last week’s planting advanced in line with the 5-year average pace for the week. An estimated 42.6 million acres of corn have been planted so far vs the 33.9 million which the average planting progress numbers for the week indicate should be “expected” at this time. Accordingly, roughly 48.6 million acres of corn remains to be planted based on the USDA’s March 31 Prospective Plantings report estimate vs 57.3 million which would be remaining if planting were in line with the average pace.
For soybeans, an estimated 13.5 million acres were planted last week, also sharply more than the 5.6 million acres which would have been planted if activity occurred in line with the 5-year average pace for the week. An estimated 20.3 million acres of soybeans have been planted so far vs the 9.5 million which would “expected” to be planed by now based on the 5-year average pace. Roughly 67.3 million acres of soybeans remains to be planted based on the USDA’s March 31 Prospective Plantings report estimate vs 78.1 million which would have been left to plant based on an average planting pace.
